First Ever Surfboard Kickflip

March 20th, 2011 by Adam

Watch the first ever video recording of a surfer successfully completing a kickflip. Like the kickflip used in skateboarding. Volcom setup this kickflip contest in November 2007 and offered $10,000 to the lucky winner.
Zoltan Torkos, of Santa Cruz, California, won the contest. On March 4, Torkos landed the move on video. On March 8, Volcom disqualified his video because his board flip was not completed “above the lip,” free of backwash and chop hops. Volcom, after seeing how much attention the contest and the kickflip was getting across the web, they decided to reverse their decision and award Zoltan the $10,000. Volcom still wants to see an “above the lip” kickflip.
Now, Volcom is offering $20,000 for the first kickflip “above the lip.” No backwash, No chop hops, or anything in the flats or below the lip of the wave. This means NO tow-ats, step-offs, jet-skis, boats, dinghys, winches, canoes, oars, helicopters, dolphins or assistance of any kind. Volcom’s NEW kickflip website.

The Nice Rack Expandable Surf, Snow & Wake Rack

February 27th, 2011 by Adam

This truly is a nice rack. I was anxiously awaiting my Nice Rack surfboard rack while checking the surf report. The next thing I know there was a knock at the door and a package with The Nice Rack shipping label on it. I knew the surfboard racks had arrived and my wife was interested to see The Nice Rack. We opened it together and we were both stoked on The Nice Rack. It was almost as fun as opening a wooden crate marked “Fra-gi-le” and finding a leg lamp!

Order your Nice Rack

The Nice Rack definitely installs wherever you want it. Install this rack in your home, garage, bedroom, board shops, shaping rooms, or merchandising displays. These racks are a great addition to any board riding enthusiast! You can fit a surfboard, wakeboard and snowboard all on one rack. Where else would you store all those boards? I know I will get great use with this rack.

Store all 3 boards

I received the Surfboard Wall Rack Single 1 Set and I look forward to adding more of the racks (and new surfboards to those racks) haha. That’s the great thing with The Nice Rack. You can easily add extra surfboard racks to your existing rack. Rack expansion has endless possibilities. All you do is snap in the new rack. “It’s a snap!”

Surfing A 5-Mile Wave In Alaska? On A River?

February 22nd, 2011 by Adam

This Alaskan tidal bore took place on the Turnagain Arm in the Cook Inlet near Girdwood (Anchorage), Alaska. A tidal bore, or bore tide, is when the leading edge of the incoming tide forms a wave (or waves) travel up a river or narrow bay in the opposite direction of the river or bay’s current. These tidal bores typically happen in areas with large tidal range. When there are large fluctuations in the low and high tides. Typically, 20 feet or so between the low and high tide marks.

The Cook Inlet is one place where a 5-mile ride is very normal. Watch the video to see why!

November 6th, 2010 by Adam

Kelly Slater made surfing history by clinching his 10th ASP World Title! What a surfing machine! Slater is 38 years young, has been surfing on the ASP World Tour for 20 years and scored “a perfect 10″ championship at Puerto Rico’s Rip Curl Pro Search. What a nice round number for his number of world titles. Congrats Slater (again)!

Golden Hour – The Wrist Shot

September 24th, 2010 by Adam

Check out this awesome all around outdoor product! This is great for surfing, hiking, walking, backpacking, stand-up paddling, kayaking, diving  or any adventure!

Attach any camera to your wrist and take your camera anywhere you go. The Wrist Shot functions in all climates. Hot, cold, dry or wet!

The owner of Golden Hour sent me a Wrist Shot to check out and this product is absolutely ingenious. I love this product and so did the other surfers at my work. The wrist shot is a simple strap that will mount with most cameras using a universal tripod mount. You have 3 different tripod locations on the wrist wrap. The Wrist Shot will hold the camera tightly to your wrist giving the surfer complete use of your hands and arms when not in use. Then will give you instant access to your camera when you need to take a picture!

The Wrist Shot is a super comfortable neoprene wrist bracelet that also protects  your camera when not in use. You will never have to worry about dropping your camera or getting it ripped out of your hands from an outside set. Take a look at the Golden Hour’s Wrist Shot tutorial video on YouTube.

The Wrist Shot is available for only $29.95

Brett Simpson Wins 2nd US Open Of Surfing Title, 2 In A Row

August 8th, 2010 by Adam

The Huntington Beach local claimed victory at the 2010 US Open of Surfing. Brett beat out South African surfer, Jordy Smith, the current ASP #1. Simpson’s heat total of 13.97 out of 20 topped Smith’s score of 8.33, making him the first back-to-back Open winner since Mark Occhilupo in 1985-86.

Simpson took home a record $100,000 for winning the Open. A pretty nice payday for surfing about 1,000 waves this past week.

Liquid Lifestyles

June 2nd, 2010 by Adam

Liquid Lifestyles is a series of 10 episodes following the surfing action in the world’s most spectacular destinations.  Champion surfers work the waves and give their ‘take’ on reading the surf along with in-depth stories from the local viewpoint.  Learn about different cultures, cuisines and people in this energetic television series.  Unlike most travel documentaries, this series is a surfer’s view of the world. Surfing is not just about the water and the adrenalin-rush of catching the big waves. It’s about knowledge, skill, cultural curiosity, and an affinity with nature.  This surfing documentary series portrays the strengths of man and nature. It puts a human face on the sport, delving behind the images of magnificent wave riding – sharing the expert surfer’s knowledge of the craft, and the instincts and attitudes of the local surfing culture.  It is also filmed in some of the most spectacular destinations on Earth.

The series is made to explain all one needs to know before setting off for their next exciting surf travel adventure.  Think of this series as a television travel show based around surfing and not a television surf show based around travel.  This in itself gives Liquid Lifestyles more marketability and value for money.

Heather Brown Surf Artist

April 28th, 2010 by Adam

Check out this local surf artist from the South Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. She has some amazing surf artwork that I would love to get my hands on, but I have a wedding to save for coming up next month. Heather is an ambassador for Foam Magazine and “Artist of the Search” for Rip Curl.

You will see popular surf breaks in her art and a unique beauty for surf and nature.
